Document quality and legibility - Some DRC documents, particularly older birth certificates and police clearances, may be handwritten, stamped on carbon paper, or in poor physical condition. Apostille availability - The DRC is not a member of the Hague Apostille Convention. This means Congolese documents cannot be apostilled in the conventional sense. Instead, documents may need to be authenticated through the Congolese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and then legalised by the Australian Embassy. Importantly, a NAATI-certified translation is still valid and accepted by Australian authorities regardless of whether the original document has been apostilled or legalised.

Birth certificates from état civil - DRC birth certificates are registered at the bureau de l'état civil of the commune where the birth occurred. If you were born in a rural area, the original registration may be at a territorial-level office. If you need a replacement, contact the bureau de l'état civil or the tribunal de paix in your commune of birth. The replacement copy (copie conforme or jugement supplétif) is equally valid for translation purposes.
