When do you need a birth certificate translation?
Visa applications
The Department of Home Affairs requires a NAATI-certified translation of your birth certificate for most visa subclasses, including Partner visas (820/801), Skilled Worker visas (subclass 189, 190, 491) and Student visas (subclass 500). Your application will not progress without it.
Australian citizenship applications
If you were born overseas and are applying for Australian citizenship by conferral, you must provide a certified English translation of your foreign birth certificate as proof of identity and date of birth.
University enrolment
Australian universities require a certified translation of your birth certificate as part of the identity verification process during enrolment, particularly for international students on a Student visa (subclass 500).
Medicare registration
When registering for Medicare as a new permanent resident or on an eligible visa, Services Australia requires identity documents in English. A NAATI-certified birth certificate translation is accepted as primary proof of identity.
100-point identity check
Banks, government agencies and employers in Australia use a points-based identity system. A certified birth certificate translation scores 70 points as a primary document - often enough when combined with a passport translation.
Registering a life event
If you need to register an overseas birth, marriage or name change with a state Births, Deaths and Marriages registry (BDM), you will need a NAATI-certified translation of the original certificate.
Settle in Australia. We've got the paperwork sorted.
What's translated
Full name, date and place of birth, sex, parents' full names (including maiden names where recorded), registration number, date of registration and the issuing registrar's name and signature.
Official certification
The NAATI translator's stamp and practitioner number make the translation legally valid for any 100-point identity check across Australia.
Accepted everywhere
Department of Home Affairs, every Australian university, Medicare, Services Australia, all state Births Deaths and Marriages registries, banks and employers.
Birth certificate translation for every life milestone
Partner Visa application
Mandatory identity document for both applicant and sponsor in subclass 820/801 (onshore) and 309/100 (offshore) partner visa applications.
100-point identity check
Counts as a 70-point primary ID document for banks, government agencies and employers across Australia.
Child enrolment at school or daycare
State education departments and childcare centres require a translated birth certificate to register a child born overseas.
Australian citizenship
Listed as a primary identity document on the citizenship by conferral checklist (Form 1300t) for applicants born overseas.
Marriage registration
State registries require a NAATI-translated birth certificate before issuing a Notice of Intended Marriage to overseas-born partners.
Inheritance and estate
Probate registries and family law courts accept a certified translation as proof of identity and family relationship in succession cases.
