When do you need a passport translation?
100-point identity check
Australia uses a points-based system to verify identity for government services, financial products and employment. A foreign-language passport with a NAATI-certified English translation counts as a primary identity document (worth 70 points). Without a translation, your passport may not be accepted as valid ID.
Opening a bank account
Australian banks including Commonwealth Bank, Westpac, ANZ and NAB require identity verification before opening an account. If your passport is not in English, a NAATI-certified translation is needed to satisfy the bank's Know Your Customer (KYC) requirements under the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act.
Applying for a Tax File Number (TFN)
The Australian Taxation Office (ATO) requires proof of identity when you apply for a TFN. If your passport is in a non-English language, the ATO accepts a NAATI-certified translation as part of your identity documentation. You need a TFN before you can start working in Australia.
Centrelink and Services Australia registration
When registering with Centrelink for Medicare, family payments, or other government services, Services Australia requires identity documents in English. A translated passport is commonly used as a primary identity document for these applications.
Enrolling at a university or TAFE
Some educational institutions require a certified English translation of your passport as part of the enrolment process, particularly when verifying your identity and visa status for Commonwealth Supported Places or student services.
Employer onboarding
Australian employers must verify the identity and work rights of every new employee. If your passport is not in English, a NAATI-certified translation allows your employer to confirm your identity details and visa conditions as part of standard onboarding procedures.
Travel free-minded. We've got the paperwork sorted.
What's translated
Full name, date and place of birth, nationality, passport number, issue and expiry dates, issuing authority, sex, and Machine Readable Zone. Endorsements and amendments included if present.

The NAATI translator's stamp and practitioner number make the translation legally valid for any 100-point identity check across Australia.
