Why Italian speakers need NAATI translations in Australia
Australian government agencies, employers and educational institutions do not accept documents in Italian. Every non-English document must be translated by a translator accredited by NAATI (the National Accreditation Authority for Translators and Interpreters). This is required for visa applications lodged with the Department of Home Affairs, licence conversions at state transport agencies, university enrolments, skills assessments and professional registration processes.
The Italian-Australian community is one of the largest and most established in Australia. Italian immigration to Australia spans over a century, and Italian remains one of the most commonly spoken community languages in the country. Melbourne has the largest Italian-born population of any city outside Italy, and significant Italian communities exist in Sydney, Adelaide, Perth and Brisbane. Today, a new generation of Italian nationals arrives on Working Holiday Visas, student visas and skilled worker visas, alongside ongoing family reunion and dual citizenship applications.
Italian-Australians seeking dual citizenship represent a unique and significant category. Many second- and third-generation Australians of Italian descent apply for Italian citizenship by descent (jure sanguinis), which requires the translation of Italian civil documents - often historical records from small Comuni. Conversely, Italian nationals applying for Australian citizenship or visas need their Italian documents translated into English by a NAATI-accredited translator.

EU-format patente di guida
Italian driving licences issued after 2013 follow the standardised EU credit-card format with harmonised category codes printed on the back. Older pink or green licences are also accepted for translation. Our translators translate all categories, restrictions, endorsements and the issuing Prefettura or Motorizzazione Civile details.
Birth certificates from the Comune
Italian birth certificates (certificato di nascita or estratto dell'atto di nascita) are issued by the Ufficio Anagrafe or Ufficio di Stato Civile of the relevant Comune. Historical certificates from smaller Comuni may be handwritten or typed on older forms. The estratto includes the essential details (name, date, place of birth, parents), while the copia integrale includes full margin annotations. Both formats are accepted for Australian purposes.
Criminal record from the Tribunale
The certificato del casellario giudiziale is Italy's criminal record check, issued by the Tribunale in the district where you reside or last resided. It can also be obtained through the Procura della Repubblica. For people with no criminal record, the certificate typically states that no entries exist (nulla risulta). Our translators preserve the original Italian phrasing alongside the English translation.
Laurea
thesis title and Italian grading system - Italian university degrees (laurea triennale for bachelor's, laurea magistrale for master's) include the thesis title (titolo della tesi) and final grade on the diploma. The Italian grading system ranges from 18/30 (minimum pass) to 30/30 e lode (highest distinction, where 'lode' means with honours - awarded at the examination committee's discretion). Our translators preserve the original grade and include a clear explanation of the grading scale so Australian skills assessment bodies and universities can accurately evaluate the qualification.
Dual citizenship applications
Italy has one of the world's most generous citizenship-by-descent (jure sanguinis) policies, and many Australians of Italian heritage apply for Italian citizenship. This process requires certified translations of Italian civil documents - often historical records from decades ago - into English for submission to Australian authorities as supporting evidence. Conversely, Italian nationals applying for Australian citizenship or visas need their Italian documents translated into English. Our translators handle both modern and historical Italian civil documents.
Apostille via Procura della Repubblica
Italian documents intended for use abroad may require an apostille under the Hague Convention. In Italy, apostilles for civil documents are issued by the Prefettura, while apostilles for court documents (including the certificato del casellario giudiziale) are issued by the Procura della Repubblica. Some Australian authorities accept NAATI-certified translations without apostille - check with the requesting agency to confirm requirements.
Italian naming conventions
Italian official documents typically use the format cognome (surname) followed by nome (given name), which is the reverse of the Australian convention. Our translators ensure names are clearly identified in the translation so there is no confusion about which name is the surname and which is the given name.
